The mix is hard to beat: warm winters, hot but breezy summers, a fast international airport in Málaga, direct flights from most of Europe, and a coastline that packs beaches, mountains, white villages, golf courses and world-class restaurants into a one-hour drive. Best areas to book a holiday rental

Fuengirola — our largest rental base

Fuengirola is where a large share of our holiday rentals sit, and for good reason. It has a long walkable beach promenade (the Paseo Marítimo), a real Spanish town centre, a direct train line to Málaga airport (about 30 minutes), and prices that are noticeably softer than Marbella. Families love it, longstay winter guests love it, and it works whether you have a car or not.

Good for: families, longstay winter guests, travellers without a rental car, mid-budget stays.

Mijas (Mijas Costa & Mijas Pueblo) — our second biggest area

Mijas Costa runs from Fuengirola towards Marbella and covers areas like La Cala de Mijas, Riviera del Sol and Calahonda — quieter beachside urbanisations with pools, golf and easy access to the AP-7 motorway. Up in the hills, Mijas Pueblo is the classic Andalusian white village with panoramic sea views. Together this is our second largest rental cluster on the coast.

Good for: couples and families who want a pool and calm, golf trips, longer stays with a rental car.

Marbella & Nueva Andalucía

Marbella is the postcard: Puerto Banús, beach clubs, the old town and a serious restaurant scene. Nueva Andalucía (the "Golf Valley") sits just behind Puerto Banús with several top courses and quiet residential streets. Rental prices are the highest on the coast, especially in July and August.

Good for: beach clubs and nightlife, golf in Nueva Andalucía, higher-end stays.

Estepona

Estepona has quietly become one of the most charming towns on the coast — flower-filled streets, a renovated old town, a long modern promenade and a much calmer feel than Marbella. It is a favourite for repeat visitors who want a real town, not a resort.

Good for: couples, culture and food, calmer family stays.

Benahavís

Inland from Estepona and Marbella, Benahavís is a mountain village famous for its restaurants and surrounded by luxury urbanisations (La Zagaleta, El Madroñal). Best with a car, and often chosen for privacy and views.

Málaga city

Málaga has transformed into one of Spain's most exciting city breaks — Picasso and Pompidou museums, tapas bars, a cruise-port marina and Muelle Uno, and its own city beaches. Perfect for a few nights either side of a beach stay.

Beaches worth planning your day around

Playa de Fuengirola / Los Boliches — long, flat, family-friendly, everything within walking distance.
La Cala de Mijas — a proper village beach with chiringuitos (beach restaurants) and a great promenade.
Playa del Cristo (Estepona) — a sheltered horseshoe cove, ideal for small kids.
Playa de la Fontanilla (Marbella) — central Marbella beach with some of the best-known chiringuitos.
Cabopino (Marbella East) — natural dunes and a smaller marina, one of the prettiest stretches on the coast.

Order fresh espeto de sardinas (sardines grilled on a bamboo skewer over an open fire) at any chiringuito — it is the signature Costa del Sol beach lunch.

Food, drinks and going out

Eating out is one of the great pleasures here, and you do not need a Marbella budget to eat well.

Fuengirola — Sohail castle side for sunset drinks, the port for fresh fish, and Calle Moncayo for tapas.
La Cala de Mijas — beachfront chiringuitos and an ever-growing cluster of international restaurants around the plaza.
Marbella old town — Plaza de los Naranjos and the tapas streets around it, then Puerto Banús for cocktails and nightlife.
Estepona old town — the flower streets are packed with small restaurants; book ahead in summer.
Benahavís — known as the "dining room of the Costa del Sol"; drive up for a long lunch.

Family activities and things to do with kids

Bioparc Fuengirola — a compact, immersive zoo in the middle of town, easily a half-day.
Aqualand Torremolinos and Aquamijas — the two big water parks, open in summer.
Selwo Aventura (Estepona) and Selwo Marina (Benalmádena) — safari-style parks and dolphinarium.
Teleférico Benalmádena — cable car up Mount Calamorro for panoramic coast views.
Crocodile Park Torremolinos — small but a hit with younger kids.

Golf on the Costa del Sol

With around 70 courses between Málaga and Sotogrande, this is one of Europe's top golf destinations. Well-known names include La Cala Resort (three courses, right next to our Mijas rentals), Mijas Golf, Santana Golf, Los Naranjos, Las Brisas, Aloha and Finca Cortesín. Book tee times a few weeks ahead for peak season (March–May and September–November).

Day trips within easy reach

Ronda (~1h from Marbella) — the dramatic bridge over El Tajo gorge, one of Andalusia's most photographed spots.
Caminito del Rey (~1h from Málaga) — a spectacular walkway through a gorge; book tickets well in advance.
Gibraltar (~1h from Estepona) — cross the border for the Rock, apes and a very different feel.
Málaga city — museums, tapas and the Picasso museum, easy by train from Fuengirola.
Mijas Pueblo — a classic white village 20 minutes above the coast.

March–May: warm days, cool evenings, everything open, best prices before summer.
June: beach season without the July–August crowds or peak prices.
July–August: hot and lively; book early and expect premium rates.
September–October: arguably the sweet spot — hot sea, quieter beaches, better rental value.
November–March: mild winters (15–20°C by day), the classic longstay season for Northern European guests.

Practical tips before you book

Airport transfers: Málaga airport (AGP) is 20–45 minutes from most rentals. Pre-book a transfer or use the Cercanías train to Fuengirola.
Do you need a car? Not for Fuengirola or central Marbella. Yes for Mijas Costa urbanisations, Benahavís and day trips.
Legal rentals only: every legitimate holiday rental in Andalusia has a tourist licence (VFT) — always check it appears in the listing.
What to look for in a listing: real recent photos, air-conditioning in every bedroom, working Wi-Fi, pool details (heated? open year-round?), parking, distance to the beach in metres — not minutes.
Longstay winter: if you are staying a month or more between November and March, ask about monthly winter rates — they can be a fraction of the summer price.
